Paul & I just booked our tickets to Iceland for Easter and I. Cannot. Wait. I'm taking my work with me and we're going for a full solid two weeks. Wahoo! Iceland seems so other worldly to me. So much open space with greenery. It just begs wandering. I'm loving this picture above with the hardened lava contrasted with the green. Have I ever shown this Bon Iver video? It captures what I think the spirit of the place feels like. So beautiful.
Do you have any tips? We have PLENTY of time to explore so I'd love your suggestions. Shops? Little corners in town? What do you think?
This was my first post on Iceland and I still dream about it.
Ahhhhh, SO JEALOUS. Iceland is very high on our to-do list. Please go scope it out and bring back loads of great recommendations because I hope we'll get there later this year :)
My friend and I just went last month on a whim- it is definitely otherworldly, especially coming from NYC. Top tips:
- the Harpa concert hall is Reykjavik is phenomenal, even if you're not an architect or a musician - stunning glass facade worth seeing at different times of the day
- go to the top of the church in Reykjavik (Hallgrímskirkja) so you can look down on top of the little Monopoly houses
- Golden Circle - geysey, Goldenfoss, Parliament Fields, etc.
- my highlight was a driving tour along the southern coast to see volcanoes, black sand beaches, waterfalls, and we got to walk/hike on the Mýrdalsjökull glacier for about 2 hours.
oh, Iceland definitely is one of the best things that happened to me the past year. it definitely is a-ma-zing. these were my highlights :
- Iceland Airwaves festival in Reykjavík. (though that's not happening when you're there ... go try & see a band play. the Icelandic music scene is so interesting, and they all seem so talented)
- Vatnajökull glacier (at Jökulsárlón).
- black beaches near to / in Vik.
- Golden Circle afternoon tour : i went with a guide (from Iceland excursions Gray Line), which was amazing since he told us A LOT of random facts about Iceland. i totally loved it. the Golden Circle includes some of the main highlights : Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir, Þingvellir national park. breathtaking.
- Riso tromp liquorice & marzipan chocolate. SO GOOD. (the package is purple / yellow)
as for Reykjavík, i liked these places:
- 12 tónar > music store with a huge (!) collection of Icelandic music.
- Tiger > a shop with lots of random things you basically all would like to take home :-)
- Babalú > cutest coffee place i've ever been (!) it's close to the big Hallgrimskirkja church.
- Laugardalslaug, swimming pool. or just another random swimming pool in the city ; the Icelandic swimming culture is amazing (and the warm water sources as well). i hardly go for a swim here at home, but swimming in Iceland really was different. especially the combination of lovely warm water & a cold sky (because, yes, they mostly swim outside, no matter how cold it is..!)
i hope this helps! & i'm looking forward to read about your Iceland adventures. if i could, i'd go back tomorrow.
We love Iceland! One tip, don't spend all your time in Reyk. If you can rent a car (SIXT has good rates), you'll love seeing more of the country. Each part is amazing. THE SOUTH for sure is gorgeous although it probably won't be as green as you see in pictures this time of year. Driving you can see so much in a few days. Our last trip we had 15 days and drove all around the country with our baby. I loved that but decided the next time that I'd fly to my favorite places. The WEST FJORDS are breathtaking but there aren't many towns there. ISAFJORDUR (in the West Fjords) and Akureyri are lovely cities that are more conveniently accessed via airplane. If you had to choose one, I'd do Isafjordur and then you have to eat at Tjöruhúsið. There are "handverk" shops in every town it seems. I loved one the best it was in HELLA (1hr away from Reyk.) HEKLA Handverkshús. Its easy to find since its THE handverk shop of the little town. They'll do custom knit work for you and send it anywhere in the world, poncho, sweater, dress, whatever you want. There is a textile shop/museum that I wanted to see but we got there when it was closed in Blönduós. One of our favorite outdoor pools (besides the blue lagoon) was the Hotel Reykjanes outdoor pool. Vik is a good starting point for seeing the black sand beaches, too. Our friend from there loves a couple thrift stores that I hope she'll mention. I told her I think she should email you since she knows her country a lot better than I do. So, if you get a random email from a girl from Iceland, ask her about her favorite thrift shops. :-) If you go to church there, you'll probably meet her too.
I posted all about our last trip if you're interested: http://www.lmtblogs.com/search/label/Iceland
You'll love it because its pure nature and art in all its beauty. Have a great time and dress warm, the wind is killer.
I want to go too ! It's SUCH a long way from Australia - hardly bears thinking about. I just love that video. That soft little sweater contrasting with the hard landscape..just beautiful. Have a great trip.
Oh wow! Have a wonderful trip. It will be magic, I´m sure. I have never been there, but it sounds amazing.
And I´m so looking forward to meet you in Berlin. I guess I will be a bit nervous the first day because of my speak, but I can not let fear stop me ;) Wish you a wonderful weekend!
Lucky you! My son went last year on a college trip, now teenagers aren't known for enthusing but he LOVED it, said he would quite happily live there, was the most amazing place he'd ever been! Blimey.
loved my time in iceland. especially the blue lagoon. here's the link to that post. http://kurtcyr.com/blog/?p=1021
icelanders do wool very well. look for the new fashion designers along the main street on the way to the lutheran church on the hill. also you have to go to Bæjarins_Beztu_Pylsur for a hotdog or a few and don't miss Harpa the new opera house. It's like the Fortress of Solidtude - it's made of prismatic glass.
oh I am so crazy jealous of your trip... two weeks!! I don't have any tips for you, but have wanted to go to Iceland for as long as I can remember and for now am going to live vicariously through you. take lots of pictures for me!
This is kimi's sister. I went to iceland in October. Loved it. Amazing fish and chips at Iceland Fish and Chips over by an art museum in Reykjavik. Also, loved the Blue Lagoon. Stayed close to it at the Northern Lights Hotel. They shuttle you where you to and fro the Lagoon. One of my favorite things was the cemetary in Reykjavik! Sounds strange but we just started walking and came upon it and explored. Never seen such a cool old cemetary. Just take plenty of money. Food is a lot of moolah! Have a blast. -brenda
yay! you will die with love for iceland. we are going back in september with henry and i am beside myself. i can't wait to hear what you think and see your pictures!
my favorite parts of iceland was when we found random landscapes to run around and frolic. Fjarðrárgljúfur - a beautiful canyon hike and Vik - black sand beaches and basalt columns were some of my favorite. and you just have to do blue lagoon. it's SO WONDERFUL.
This photos is so beautiful, it doesn't feel real. I was in Iceland a long time ago and I had a flash feeling that it was almost like landing on the moon. The surface, as you land, feels so out of the ordinary. Lovely.
Iceland makes the best licorice I've ever found! Try the ones with a '3' on the packet. And try get to the glacier lake on the south eastern coast. About 5 hours from Reykjavik from memory. It was ridiculously beautiful! One of the most amazing places I've ever visited.

ah, amazing! iceland is such a beautiful and magical place, it almost feels like another planet. i'm dying to go back. enjoy!
I was only in Iceland for 24 hours, but thought it was incredible! Didn't make it to Blue Lagoon, but that's high on my priority list.
All my Iceland finds + pics from my own trip are in my archives: http://www.pret-a-voyager.com/search/label/iceland
So many amazing shops and just fun to wander around Reykjavik (don't miss the contemporary art museum there).
Also, this may possibly be the best tourism video EVER! http://vimeo.com/12236680
