Les Choristes has been a favorite of mine since it came out, but I haven't seen it in some time so Paul and I watched it over the weekend. Have you seen it? It makes my heart hurt. Sometimes in a very good way--the sets, the music, the sincerity of the boys singing and learning to love music--and sometimes in a not-so-good way like an "I can't believe people treat other people like that way". The headmaster gets me riled! It's set in France in 1949 and the sets and costumes are muted yet beautiful. The farewell scene kills me. That's all I'm going to say now.
Watch the
trailer and listen to
La Nuit.
PS-isn't the main boy stunning? Kind of haunting. And that's his real voice!

Yes, I LOVE that movie. And it does hurt to watch some parts, but I am so glad for pieces like this that make you think about what it is to be human, and cultivating the most beautiful parts of our souls (and those around us.)
I adore this film. The acting, lessons it teaches, the music... the whole shebang. I even named my pug Pepinot after the little boy who is waiting for his father to come and get him.
Oh, I love Les Choristes. And the music is terribly beautiful.
The trailer looks brilliant. Sigh. Another addition to my must-watch list, when will this torture end?
:)
Les Choristes is so fantastic! You're right, it is a heartache to watch, but such a rewarding heartache.
Love this movie!! Especially Pepinot :)
I'm off to put it on lovefilm so I can watch it again. Just beautiful.
Britt -- if you were here we'd grab a bunch of us and watch it and cry for joy when pepinot has his happy home at long last. I saw that movie a couple of years ago but I still remember the tugs at my heart strings. This post makes me want to watch it again but I'll have to have major fortifications. Just wait till you have kids. Seeing a child that doesn't have a soft place to fall turns me into a wreck. But we can endure knowing it has a happy ending -- and an extra treat given that it is a French film. :)
Anyway, yes, it is a wonderful movie and I love the music and the haunted look in the main singin boy's face. Love you!
i need to watch this.

This is one of my favorite movies, too. I totally get that heart hurty feeling.
Such beautiful movie. Rivals Life is Beautful (La Vita e Bella) for my favorite foreign language film. Have you seen Sarah's Key? I bet you would like that one too.
@melany, No, I haven't heard of Sarah's Key, but thanks for the recommendation. I'll try and get a hold of it!
It's one of my absolute favorites! When I was living in Taiwan I caught a ride with someone to the train station and they were listening to the soundtrack. It was something that connected us through the language barrier.
i have the DVD and enjoy watching every few months. I do think the main boy is very handsome...and his own voice! What is he doing? do you know?
@Robyn. Yes! I looked it up. He has been singing since but according to wikipedia he's taking a break from it right now.
I remember watching that movie in a french class years ago when it was the last day of term. The music is incredible, and strangely, the guy looks like my ex abit ;) but still, completely melts your heart!
I love this movie too ! (& I'm lucky enough to have a Paul to watch it with as well!)
Just started blogging , hope mines as nice as yours someday x x x
